Herbert joined up with his brother Frank, went through the same training, and went ‘over the top’ with him on July 1st, 1916 on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, known as the bloodiest day in British military history as 19,240 soldiers were killed. Herbert is buried in Danzig Alley cemetery on the Somme. John and Mary Prescott’s third son Robert served in the Royal Navy and survived the war.
