Some families paid a terribly high price during the Great War, and the Woodwards of Deyes Lane, Maghull, and later Grecian Terrace, Everton, were among them. Six sons of James and Ellen Woodward set off to war – ony three survived. Harry, who moved to Gosford Street, Dingle, Liverpool, after marrying Florence, was a private with the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. He was killed in the last 100 days of fighting, and is buried in Sandpits cemetery, near the village of Fouquereuil, France. His family had an inscription added to his headstone – ‘Until the day dawns and the shadows flee away.’ (Further information about Harry can be seen in the Local Stories section of this website.)
